Even Finland don’t give away money for free

I’ve read article 2 years ago. Here it is.

The article was about a welfare experiment that Finland was going to run. It looked so tempting since the idea is the government give citizens an unconditional monthly payment.

In the mid-nineteen-seventies, the Canadian province of Manitoba ran an unusual experiment: it started just handing out money to some of its citizens. The goal of the project, called Mincome (minimum income), was to see what happened. Did people stop working? Did poor people spend foolishly and stay in poverty? But, after a Conservative government ended the project, in 1979, Mincome was buried. Decades later, Evelyn Forget, an economist at the University of Manitoba, dug up the numbers. And what she found was that life in Dauphin improved markedly. Hospitalization rates fell. More teenagers stayed in school. And researchers who looked at Mincome’s impact on work rates discovered that they had barely dropped at all. The program had worked about as well as anyone could have hoped.

A dreamlike project.

Some countries started to run this experiment. Despite the fact that there are so many people are against it, the goal is clear: to end poverty, to fight with inequality and to save laborers from working in the jobs they don’t want.

I wondered the result of this experiment after 2 years. So I checked. I encountered an article which says: “Finland will end its experiment” :))

The program, which Finland inaugurated in January 2017, saw 2,000 jobless people receive €560 ($685) per month without requiring them to work or seek employment. Recipients who found a job continued to receive the payments. In 2015, Finland’s unemployment rate had hit a 17-year high of 10%, prompting calls for welfare reform.

Where words fail. Hope robots will take everything over soon and give us a basic income.
